Malting news Germany: GlobalMalt becomes the leading malting group in Germany

On 1 April 2006, Schill Malz GmbH & Co. KG and C. Thywissen GmbH will merge their brewing malt activities in a joint venture, in which both partners participate as equals. The administration of the new company will be based in the Rhine-Main- Neckar region. The management board will be formed from the managing directors of the two former companies, Dr. Carl Otto Schill, Peter Schill and Sjef Menu.

Sales and marketing activities for the malt will be combined with those of Tivoli Malz GmbH in the GlobalMalt group. With an annual malting capacity of 310 000 tonnes, the resulting company will be the largest malting group in Germany. GlobalMalt also operates a malting house in Bydgoszcz/Poland with a capacity of approx. 40 000 tonnes.

The locations of the malting houses complement each other ideally. As well as the malting house in Worms/Rhineland-Palatinate, Schill Malz also brings its stakes in Thüringer Malz with operations in Sangerhausen/Saxony-Anhalt and Clingen/Thuringia into the joint venture. The oldest plant in the group, located in Osthofen/ Rhineland-Palatinate, will be closed in order to increase the efficiency of the group. Thywissen operates one malting house in Mülheim-Ruhr/North Rhine-Westphalia and a further plant in Hürth/North Rhine-Westphalia. The malting house of Tivoli Malz in Hamburg completes the number of locations.

This joint venture creates synergies in particular through optimised logistics, more intensive market development and cost reductions due to economies of scale. With modern efficient operations, which are ideally located relative to one another in terms of logistics, a solid financial base and a lean, efficient employee structure, GlobalMalt is excellently positioned to take an active role in shaping the structural changes in the malt industry.
